Location- Bristol (commutable from Bristol, Bath, Somerset, Swindon, Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Newport)
£39,000- £49,000 + benefits


The BTE Underwriting Manager (BTEUM) is primarily responsible for reviewing and controlling our BTE business risk exposure in line with the prescribed appetite. As such, the BTEUM manages the scheme application, set up and renewal processes, leads the underwriting assessment of BTE stand-alone business, oversees the performance of all scheme arrangements, whilst also handling escalations in respect of acceptance, pricing and performance and customer complaints. The BTEUM is therefore required to identify and lead the fulfilment of any technical training needs within the BTE Underwriting function and through a strict audit schedule, monitor and control the application of the internal delegated underwriting authorities within that team. The BTEUM must also assist in fostering our working relationships with key customers and capacity underwriters alike.


Key Accountabilities/Responsibilities:


* Manage the BTE underwriting function and its teams e.g. broker and corporate. In doing so, take responsibility for the function's work prioritisation, motivation, performance, productivity and quality.
* Plan, prioritise & supervise work to meet company service, quality and profit standards. Ensure effective collaboration between skills sets minimises unnecessary and avoidable risk exposure.
* Lead, monitor, control and improve the business processes associated with the BTE underwriting function; ultimately ensuring processes are completed in an accurate and timely manner whilst also fulfilling the risk appetite guidance as set by senior management.
* Deal with technical & escalated underwriting queries primarily from within the function but sometimes from other stakeholders, ensuring both satisfactory resolution & the development of the company's knowledge of and capability to handle similar issues in the future.
* With the input of senior underwriting managers, the BTE sales function and other internal stakeholders, create and deliver function improvement projects that ensure we deliver market leading customer service. Visiting external customers / suppliers may be required.
* Ensure all function activities are carried out in line with stipulated processes, procedures & authority limits, providing coaching & training where necessary to the department.
* Work effectively with all stakeholders to the product (including brokers, insurers, MGA's, solicitors, underwriters, sales teams and industry forums/bodies).
* Identify the L&D needs of the function and drive the continual development of its knowledge and skills in an appropriate and effective manner.
* Prepare & deliver management information, inclusive of narrative, in relation to BTE underwriting inputs and outcomes.


You will need to have previous experience of working in a role with line management responsibilities, CII qualified and 5 years underwriting experience ideally within the legal expense insurance market
